BMG has launched its new ‘world class production efficiency’ initiative which offers straightforward cost control solutions to the serious threats of non-competitiveness facing local industry.
“Within the last three years, South African manufacturers have witnessed the erosion of a global competitive advantage, where they enjoyed the lowest electricity costs amongst western industrialised nations,” says Dave Russell, group technical director, BMG. “The stage is now set for South Africa’s electricity costs to rise next year to above those of the majority of European, American and Asian nations, with which local business trades.
“Indications are that industry will have little choice but to fully exploit every opportunity to reduce operating costs and maximise the productive output of every asset in an organisation. Exporters will depend on these measures to remain competitive and producers for the domestic market will be forced to improve production efficiencies, to avoid being swamped by low cost imports.”
Capitalising on BMG’s technical solutions capability and its wide range of industrial products and services, the company is aiming to propose concepts to its customers to achieve overall energy savings of up to 25%, up to 15% reduction in maintenance costs and an 8% increase in production asset availability. The actual improvements achieved will depend on individual company circumstances.
The success of this initiative lies in the compounding effect BMG offers, by selectively combining condition based maintenance products and services, with maintenance techniques and upgrades to energy efficient products.
Each element of an improvement solution will have an impact on the surrounding existing facilities, so BMG will apply a total outcome approach to identifying primary areas for attention.
This will not necessarily involve embarking on a radical plant replacement strategy, although the financial logic of selective equipment replacement may need to be considered.
Through this production efficiency initiative, BMG is committed to position itself as the leader in providing practical energy efficiency and productivity improvement solutions to local industry.
