Terex gains sole rights to Sleipner transport system

Terex Africa recently acquired the sole African
marketing rights for the Sleipner transport system – a Finnish design that has revolutionised the transportation of excavators and shovels across the mining world.

The use of the Sleipner system enables operators to transport their costly pieces of capital equipment at up to speeds of 15 kilometres per hour, not only yielding a massive reduction in transit times but eliminating wear and tear on their machines’ tracks.

The system also makes it feasible for repair and maintenance jobs to be carried out undercover in workshops, rather than on site. The Sleipner is simplicity itself. The excavator is driven onto a pair of Sleipner wheeled units, one for each track. A dump truck is then
used as a support where the excavator, using its boom as a lever, raises itself to a height of between 200mm and 500mm above the
ground. The truck, excavator and Sleipner wheels are then combined to form a single, articulated unit.

terex sleipnerAccording to Clyde Holland, Terex Africa’s contracts and tenders manager for mining and drills, Sleipner units can accommodate excavators weighing between 50 and 550 tonnes, depending upon the types of truck used by the customer.

“The payback times for customers using these units are impressive – sometimes little more than a few months. Not only are they able
to use their shovels more cost effectively, but they are also saved the expense of damage and wear on expensive tracks and undercarriages.” Holland adds that to assist the customer in
making an informed purchasing decision, the Terex Africa team conducts a full analysis of the client’s operation, including its vehicle fleet and plant compatibility.

Prospective clients have also been invited to view the first
Sleipner units to reach African soil in operation at First Quantum Minerals’ Solwezi Mine in north-western Zambia, Geita Gold Tanzania, U&M Chingola Zambia.
